23-year-old Meenakshi and 30-year-old Deepak were both stabbed by Meenakshi’s relatives, Rinku (20) and Shankar (25). While Deepak was brought dead to the hospital Meenakshi was stabbed 9 times and was battling for life as per reports. Meenakshi’s family was preparing for her wedding with another man but she decided to elope with her cousin Deepak. Both the accused have been arrested. Far from feeling any regret for the crime, Meenakshi’s family has decided to ostracize her. Upset that she has survived the stabbing. Her grandmother reportedly said, “I will poison her” if she sees her. Further, the logic used by the family is that if Meenakshi didn’t run, they would talked to her about her choice but once she eloped, there was no looking back (from the killing).
The media reports did not mention the families cast. Primarily it does not appear to be a caste-related anger but the mere fact that she eloped with a man of her choice while her family had plans to marry her off to someone else.
